Before you post- please search for the trail and see if there's already a thread on it, and if so add your comments to it. If you can't find a thread you started, chances are it got merged with an existing thread about the same trail. Please include the FR (Forest Road) number and/or common nickname (for example, FR3456, Log Corral), and as much detail as possible. Sunflower Mine Loop (FR25A, FR3721, FR201A)

Post by -Spike- » Tue Mar 05, 2019 8:59 am

This is a ~6 mile trail that along with parts of FR25 and FR201 comprises a ~10 mile loop and is adopted by the Honeywell Four Wheel Drive club. Much of the trail follows Sycamore Creek and offers some challenges to moderately built full-size vehicles, along with sights like the Sunflower Mine processing site and fantastic scenery. The trail is in the creekbed in several places, with boulder fields and tight squeezes making it 'interesting'. This trail is not stocker-friendly or for the faint of heart. It has made its mark on many body panels and suspension bits.

As the scope of the work is too much for the Honeywell club to manage alone, TRAL has partnered with them to do lots of repairs on this trail in the past few years. It's an ongoing process, as the water that naturally flows through the area has its way with the terrain, eroding the trail surface and moving big boulders around at will. At one point, parts of the trail were closed by the Forest Service as they were considered unsafe or impassable, but we were able to fix the problems and get it re-opened. TRAL also helped the Forest Service install a gate on FR201 north of the intersection with FR201A so that FR201 could be temporarily closed in snow season without closing the Sunflower Mine loop.

Current conditions on this trail are unknown. The winter storm season has likely wreaked havoc, and it would be surprising if the trail didn't get damaged. If you have run this trail post-February of 2019 we'd love to hear from you. TRAL will plan an event to run the trail and assess any damages in the near future, keep an eye on the Upcoming Events forum if you're interested in joining us.

The M&F Jeepers ran this trail on Monday, March 18. We found the trail open and fairly easy. We are rating this trail 3.5 on a 5 scale. The only thing we noticed was that the hill climb out of the wash is getting overgrown.
