Hells Gate from the East FR178 and 177

Post by yattr » Wed Feb 07, 2018 7:29 pm

Inspecting and signing the 178 and 177 was an outstanding trip and adventure. Not only were the trails fun but the views are spectacular.

The 178 trail to the 177 junction if mostly under a canopy of trees where you thread the needle through a continuously tight twisty trail. Longer wheel base vehicles might find this section even more challenging. The 177 takes you to a lower scrub elevation with a combination of rocky sections, fun uphill and downhill challenges and views. It is slowing going, especially on the 178 (did minor brushing and hand tree moving on the way in but more will always be needed) and a long distance to the end of the 177 (about 13 miles). We investigated a trail to a ranch, a more direct way out, but it didn’t appear to be friendly based on a no trespassing sign on the gate in. We came out the same path we took in.

3 of us, Jeff Lardner, David Kennedy and myself (Ed Rocha) departed Payson just before 8 AM. We made it back to Payson about 7:30 PM. It should take others less time as we did down tree removal, brushing and flat tire repair (downward slope with the flat tire in a parallel rut of course). Plus additional time getting the Hi-Lift jacks to work after being dormant for ages.

A great day in the forest.

Looking west beyond the wilderness marker. Should be a nice hike to the canyon edge and possible overlooking down in Tonto Creek and hells gate Canyon

Looking northwest into canyon and FR1625 which has nice views looking east. At the end of FR1625 the eastern side on the stopping point offers a direct view to Tonto Creek and Hells Gate Canyon. It is quite enough that you can hear the falls...

Here is a Google Earth Pro, GEP, overview of the area including FR1625. The yellow section of the 1624 is an 2 track trail that is activity being used to get to the overlook but is within the wilderness boundary.

The GEP measured distance from the end of the 177 to the canyon edge is approximately 1 mile
